Obituary of Vincent B. Totten

Vincent B. Totten, 89, of Washington, N.J., died Friday, March 17, 2006, in the Care Center of Lopatcong, Phillipsburg. Born: August 22, 1916 in Changewater, N.J., he was a son of the late Ziba and Flora Totten. Personal: Vincent was a lifelong resident of Changewater, N.J. From 1934 to 1937, Vincent was a cashier and made deliveries for the A and P Food Market in Washington, N.J. From 1937 to 1942, Vincent worked for Eddie's Market in Clinton. From 1942 onward for 29 years, until the plant closed, Vincent worked for Taylor Wharton Steel Mill in Highbridge, N.J. Vincent attended school through the eighth grade in a one room schoolhouse in Changewater, N.J. He was of the Methodist faith. Vincent was best known for volunteering at the Butler Park Bingo. He loved Country and Blue Grass music. He and his loving wife, Judith, were married for 14 years. Memberships: Vincent was a founding member, and the oldest living member of the Butler Park Fire Department. He was also a life member of the Exempt Firemen's Association. Survivors: In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Bill, of Piscataway, N.J.; five daughters, Ruth Ann Rush, in South Carolina, Ethel Berger, of Phillipsburg, Virginia Totten, of Bangor, Dorothy Solliday, in Virginia, and Ranae Hackett, of Washington, N.J.; 20 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren. His first wife, Jennie Louella Margeson, died in 1980. Two sisters, Mary Davidson and Susan Burge, and a great grandson, Leon William Hackett, all died earlier as well. Services: 2 p.m. Thursday in the Warren Hills/Ford Memorial Home, 234 West Washington Ave., Washington, N.J. Call from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 1 p.m. until time of services Thursday in the funeral home. Burial will be in Port Murray Cemetery, Port Murray, N.J.
