Obituary of John McVeigh

John Red McVeigh, 84, of Washington, NJ, passed away peacefully, at St. Barnabus Medical Center, Livingston, NJ, on Wednesday, February 27, 2013. Born: Red was born October 15, 1928 in Newark, NJ, a son, of the late Joseph and Lillian, McVeigh. Personal: He resided in Newark for many years, until moving to West Orange. A graduate of Barringer High School Class of 1947, he also attended the Missouri Auction School. Red served proudly in the United States Army during the Korean War. After the war, he began his career as a Newark Firefighter, only to find his true calling in the service of the Essex County Sherriff's Department, from which he retired in 1991 after 35 years of service. A man of many talents, he also owned and operated a custom upholstery business in Newark, and was a licensed Auctioneer for Taramac Auction House in Kearny N.J. Red was an avid collector, enjoyed his tomato garden and will be remembered always for his love of a lively discussion. Memberships: He was a member of the PBA local 183 Essex County Sheriffs Dept., a member of the Essex County Pistol team, and a member of the VFW, in Glen Gardner and West Orange. Survivors: Red is survived by his son, John J. McVeigh of Bucks County, PA; two daughters, Colleen Schiller and her husband Dennis, of Washington, Eileen Eckel and her husband Thomas, of Kearny; his companion, Doris Walker; his second wife, Betty McVeigh; a brother, Peter McVeigh; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Red is predeceased in death by his first wife, Marge; and his great-grandson, Liam. Services: Visitation will be on Sunday, March 3, 2013, from 4 to 8:00 p.m., at Warren Hills Memorial Home, 234 W. Washington Ave., Washington, NJ 07882. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, March 4, 2013 at Immaculate Conception Church, 316 Old Allerton Rd, Annandale, NJ 08801, 10:00 a.m., with Father David Wejnerowski, officiating. Burial will be at Gate of Haven Cemetery, East Hanover, NJ. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Warren Hills Memorial Home. 234. W. Washington, Ave. Washington, NJ 07882.
