Obituary of Raymond Hengst

On January 24, 2024, Raymond Hengst 96 years old of Washington, NJ passed away with his family around him. He was born July 22, 1927, in Rock Rapids, Iowa to Charles “Tjitte” and Tena “Trijntje” Hengst. Raymond was a proud and dedicated life-long dairy and crop farmer. He was a proud Frieslander who spent part of his childhood in Gaast, Friesland. He worked on his family farm in Harmony, New Jersey until venturing out to establish his own farm. Along with his wife and six children, he maintained a successful dairy and crop farm, R-Hengst Farms, in Washington, New Jersey. Raymond was a man of integrity, compassion, and foremost a loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather. Raymond served on the Agway committee, was a member of the New Jersey Holstein Association and the Farm Bureau. He enjoyed his winters in Tavares, Florida where he enjoyed fishing and navigating his pontoon on Lake Eustis. While in Florida, he formed lasting friendships. Raymond is survived by Peggy Hengst, wife of 74 years; children; Eloise Cary (Michael); Leonard Hengst (Judy); Peggy Jean Hannema (Willem); Raymond Hengst (Connie); Linda Watters (Joseph); and Heather Tucker (Curt); a sister, Elizabeth Vander Waal; 13 grandchildren: Sean, Michael, Erin, Willem, Holly, Laura, Mary Lyn, Amanda, Joseph, Ryan, Curtis, Megan, and Shanna; and 13 great grandchildren. Raymond was predeceased by parents Charles and Tena Hengst and brothers Lawrence, Peter, and Harold. Family and friends may pay their respects on Monday January 29, 2024 from 3-6 PM at the Warren Hills Memorial Home. 234 W. Washington Ave. Washington, NJ 07882. A funeral service celebrating Raymond’s life will be celebrated on Tuesday January 30, 2024 at 11:00 AM at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Calvary Community Church Cemetery in Harmony, NJ.
