Obituary of Michael A. Kovacs

Michael A. Kovacs, 83, of Washington Township, NJ passed away peacefully in his daughter Mary's house on November 18, 2021. Michael was born in Washington at his family home on September 9, 1938 to the late Michael J. and Etta "Guinta" Kovacs. Michael was a lifelong resident of Washington, NJ and graduated from Washington High School, class of 1956. He earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from The Ohio State University and Lafayette College. Michael served proudly in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. Michael was the past Mayor of Washington Township, serving as Mayor for 12 years, and for more than 30 years on the Washington Township Committee. Michael was inducted into the New Jersey Mayor Hall of Fame in 2012. Michael's hobbies and passions included coaching wrestling at Phillipsburg Catholic High School and multiple sports at Warren Hills High School. Michael was a devout Catholic at St. Theodore Catholic Church in Port Murray, and his family and faith were the foundation of his life. Michael was married to his loving wife Barbara "Giorlando" Kovacs of 54 years who passed away in 2019. Michael is survived by his children, Marc Kovacs and his wife Caroline, Matthew Kovacs, Mary Kovacs, Michael C. Kovacs and his wife Linda, Miranda Coleman and her husband Thomas, and Michaela Kovacs; a brother, Ronald Kovacs and his wife Mary Lou; as well as 6 grandchildren. Family and friends may pay their respects on Sunday, November 21, 2021 from 12:00 - 4:00 PM at the Warren Hills Memorial Home, 234 W. Washington Ave. Washington, NJ 07882. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, November 22, 2021 at 11:000 AM at St. Theodore Catholic Church, 855 State Hwy Route 57. Port Murray, NJ 07865. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery in Washington. In lieu of flowers mass intentions or donations may be made in Michael's name to St. Theodore Church.
